Top Ten: You can play these while you decorate the Christmas Tree...

It's Tuesday!  And you know what I haven't done in a very long time?

That's right.  So to get you in the Christmas spirit (because I am!) here are some songs you can play while you make cookies.  Mmmm.
Now there are so many Christmas songs I LOVE, but I decided to go with the songs that I like how they are sung, not just the song itself (hence no Jingle Bell Rock, or It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year).
Here are my...

Piece of Me: FIVE GOOOOLD RINGS

So I only did one of these two posts ago...yes...I need to get writing again.  BUT since this is so easy, I have no excuse.  Here's...a Piece of Me.

This month (December)…

I like: that I can officially start playing Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas is You" and not feel weird about it.

I don't like: the cold!!!!  It is already snowing!!!  And it was -10 C today!!!  WHY THE FACE?!

I want you to know: that Lady Gaga was in Noordwijk at this boujie hotel and Fien and I fer realsies took a picture (drawn by Fien) to the front desk and asked them to deliver it.  I don't know if they did, and I have no way of knowing because Lady Gaga is offline right now for the World AIDS day campaign (which you should TOTALLY go and support).

I've planned: Christmas in Prague!  My favorite city in Europe seems like the perfect place to spend the holidays (besides the Bay Area.)  Plus I'm seeing the Nutcracker and Swan Lake.  And then on my way home, a stop in Munich to see what the cities like when it's not covered in Beer.

I want to say to someone special:
dear Sinterklaas - I've been very good this year.

Raindrops on Roses and Whiskers on Kittens

Yes today is Tuesday.  But Today is a VERY SPECIAL Tuesday.  Because today is my...

200th POST!!!

(Commence fireworks and ticker tape parades)

I've been writing this blog for a little over a year now.  Although my first four were over the course of four months and were just me warming up to the idea of keeping a blog so that my family and friends could see what I was doing while abroad.
But here we are, 196 posts later.  Some of these entries have been heartfelt, some have been funny, some have been the epitome of lazy, and some (and by that I mean many) have been one just like this...a Top Ten.

And so in honor of it being my 200th, I'm going to attempt something that will probably require editing as soon as I hit "Publish Post."  But oh well.  Without furthur ado, I give you...

MY TOP TEN FAVORITE THINGS

Because I am an 80 year old alto at heart...

So...I love Bea Arthur.  Like LOVE her.  Like, I actually cried when I found out she died.

Ok, so, my friend Pat and I tend to have ridiculous conversations involving various songs and ideas for re-writings of said songs, or video arrangements of said songs, etc.  My favorite being me, in Holland, singing Patti LaBelle's rewritten "I Got a New Latitude."  Yep it's real.

Sooo...I made this video.  It's a little long.  But I'd like to think it's worth it.  If only Betty White would watch it and then call me to tell me I'm brilliant.  Because really, that's why I made it (also because I love Bea.) Enjoy!

I want your lovin' and I want your revenge

Last night I did it…
I saw it…
I experienced it…

That’s right…The Lady Gaga Monster’s Ball Tour 2010.

And it was amazing.  No strike that…it was incredible.  Wait one more…it was...

Say what you will about Lady Gaga (except keep negative things to yourself thank you very much), that woman can put on a show.  The show started off with Semi Precious Weapons.  At first it seemed strange, but once I realized what they were/about I realized only this band could ever open for the Gags.  It was a rock/metal band lead by a fabulously gay transvestite with gold glittered boots who dropped the f-bomb more times than Gaga changed outfits.  And somehow it was perfect.  They’re hit single out later this year was entitled “I can’t pay my rent, but I’m F*ckin’ Gorgeous.”
But then…It was time.  It’s so hard to explain…the outfits, the dancing, the sets…all so amazing.  I also appreciate my required Drama 50 classes in college a lot more now because I was able to appreciate the set/costume/lighting and sound designs much more.  Not only did I notice “Hey look Gaga has a black lace onesie,” I also was able to think, “hey look at those high-waisted modern leos on the men and how they complement their dancing and the surrounding tree/forest set and gobo’d moonlit lighting for this particular piece. (It was “Alejandro” for those curious.)
I also love Lady Gaga for what she stands for.  I know I know all you moms/Fox news reporters are like "All she does is dance around half /fully naked. But listen. Over and over again she continually encourages anyone and everyone to be who they are.  Yes she is an extreme of so many things…and some (crazy) people tend to not like that.  But she has provided a gateway for teenage, young adult, gay, straight, tall, short, people to be happy with themselves.  Seriously…watch almost every interview she’s ever done.  Also she said it at the concert.  Another beautiful moment was in the middle of “Speechless” (one of my favorite songs) she asked for a moment of reflection on the plane crash a couple days ago that killed many Dutch citizens leaving a single 8 year old boy as a survivor.
Ok now for the bad part…I couldn’t afford the good tickets.  I couldn’t even afford the floor tickets.  To be honest, I couldn’t afford the tickets I had.  But I was still there to enjoy the concert and dance the night away to the best current dance music artist out there (it’s true.)  So when a song like “Just Dance” comes on, what should you do?  Why get up and dance of course!  Except for some reason, my section was filled with party poopers.  NO ONE GOT UP!  And after a quick chorus, we were actually TAPPED ON THE SHOULDER AND ASKED TO SIT DOWN!!!!  Our reply…
- You do realize you’re at a pop concert don’t you?
- Do you know the title of this song?
- This isn’t the symphony!
- Are you f*ckin sh*tting me?
- Why are you a forty year old woman with no obvious younger children under your control even at a Lady Gaga concert?

- Oh ok, sorry.

Yea that’s right…we conceded…until “Telephone.”  Finally people starting standing around us, and with a (bitchy I admit) glance backward, we proudly stood and danced the rest of the song away.  Along with several songs after.  And soon forgot the horrible task that had been requested of us and enjoyed the rest of the night.
Now, I took pictures, but since I was so far away, none of them really turned out.  But here’s me after the show…

My only regret is that I didn't get more "dressed up."  Lady Gaga's probably one of the few concerts I could have gotten away with wearing my bright pink tights and giant bow headband.  Yes I really own both of those things.

So let’s just say it was wonderful.  And now for some Lady Gaga tributes…to my current song I’m obsessing with “Bad Romance”...

First…I found this over on Happy Jeannie’s blog today and it was totally appropriate…she’s right too, it does remind you of college…

Then there’s this one…Hooray for (very) supportive mothers!

And then the piece de resistance…my very own Fien…I know…it’s amazing…

I want nothing else...

The year was 1999 in the San Francisco Bay Area. Bell bottoms had returned and the shirts had gotten short.  A new music known as “alternative” was hitting the streets and the kids were doing a new thing called “moshing.”

Oh wait.  That’s right it was 2010, I was in Amsterdam and was wearing nothing close to bell bottoms and a crop top…except I was still listening to alternative rock and attempting to definitely “mosh.”  So why this sudden flashback to Middle School?  Because last night I saw one of my favorite bands of all time – Third Eye Blind.

For those of you who don’t know or only think you might know them, Third Eye Blind is responsible for the ever popular
Doo doo doo, doo do doo dooo, doo doo doo, doo do doo dooo, doo doo doo, doo do doo dooo, doo doo doo
Also known as “Semi-Charmed Kind of Life.” (oh, now you see it)

As psyched as Mags and I were, we assumed we’d be in a large club attempting to even get a good look at the stage and maybe be able to dance a little while signing along to our favorite songs.
But no!  When we got into the stage area, we were able to walk right up to the front.  And when the band came out to perform there were maybe four people I would have had to step on should I feel so inclined to climb onto the stage and jump the lead guitarist (which I soooo wanted to do trust me.)
It’s amazing how you’re transported back to being a kid with a crush when you come into contact with said crush.  (I still get woozy when I watch Chris O’Donnell on NCIS: LA)
What I couldn’t get over was the amount of Dutch people there that seemed to know all the lyrics.  I mean, I knew they are an internationally known band and did tours (including Amsterdam) before, but somehow I was surprised when the Dutch boys next to me started singing along.  Here’s a little clip from Jumper.  This was my high school boyfriend’s favorite song…I still think of him every time I hear it…
And no that is not me singing completely off key.  I don't know what you're talking about.
And here’s some more shots of the band.  It should be noted that I didn’t have use zoom at all.  This is really how close they are.  I know.  Lucky right?
I just can’t get over it…there they were…rocking their hearts out. singing old and new songs, and admitting to missing California almost as much as I did.  Which meant I had to get this shirt…
Of course I also had to go on iTunes and buy their new album.
It’s times like this when I wish I had twitter on my phone.  Now you remember how I’m not a huge tweeter? Well in this case, I could have sent them a message and then in my wildest dreams they would have written back right after the show and we would have met up for a drink in Amsterdam.  So I blame the phone.  Because that’s the only fault I see in that plan.
So 3eb if naturally you’re reading this, and you rocked Amsterdam so hard core Saturday night.  I love you.

That seems to be the topics I like discussing.  Apparently.

But what should I do to celebrate?  Cuz fer realsies, I have no clue.  So I’ll just make it a tradition…key blog posts will be nothing more than lists of things that have nothing to do with my blog, but everything to do with the number.
So here’s my…

There are no kangaroos in Austria

Well after my time in Prague, I headed over to Vienna.  And once again, I was blown away by the city.  Completely different from Prague and Berlin, the city was still as magnificent as the first two.  This time, I was actually couch surfing, not staying in a hostel, so when I arrived I headed over to my host Jasmin’s house, where I was greeted with a smile, Swiss coffee and chocolate, and musical theatre.  At this point, I should inform you that although living in Austria, Jasmin is Swiss.  She is also studying musical theatre.  See, now everything makes sense again.
Unfortunately there were no walking tours so it was up to me to wander around the city getting lost.  But getting lost in a good way.  Because I had been left a map, I had a 48-hour public transport card, and I knew I could somehow find my way back if I just got on enough trams. :-D  My first sight of Vienna was the capitol/congress building…
Gorgeous right?  I couldn’t get over it.  As I continued I made it to the Cathedral…
In front of here was a HUGE ice skating rink/track/fun fair thing going on.  It looked amazing, but unfortunately I didn’t have time to join.
Then I continued on to the theatre…
I also saw some other gorgeous buildings and statues…

And then the palace…
I mean this place is ginormous!  And gorgeous!  So absolutely beautiful!  I couldn’t get over it.  And there was a park, and lots of buildings, all a part of it.  I wandered around there for a good hour.  Unfortunately the museum containing the Crown Jewels and other cool things that they recommend you do while in Vienna was closed, so I had to find another museum to check out.
That’s whe I came across the Historical and Natural History museums….

They were across from each other and almost looked like mirror images.  Since I love natural history, I decided to visit that one.  It was also half as much as the historical museum.  But I think the best part was being inside such old and highly ornate buildings…

They had a whole exhibit on Darwin since it’s like the 200th birthday or something like that…

They also randomly have the actual shed where Ben Franklin discovered electricity.  I thought that should be in an American museum, but it's still a cool concept (even if the legend was partly busted on Mythbusters)…

And the original Venus…

Pat this one’s for you…

Oh and look it’s my favorite animal the Red Panda!!!

Of course the entire time I kept thinking about “Night at the Museum” and how cool this place would be at night when the entire upper floor (which was all animal/dinosaur displays) came to life…

Yes call me a nerd, but I’m pretty sure there’s another sequel in the making, so they should take a page outta this blog.
Across the street, you could also see the Heldenplatz – or Hero Square – the place of Hitler’s great (by great I mean huge, not awesome) speech welcoming Austria into the Third Reich.  There’s nothing really saying that around there…they're not too proud of it (for obvious reasons,) but I had done my research ahead of time so I knew...

After exploring the entire museum, I continued on to find the opera house…
Now the opera is EXTREMELY famous here.  As is Mozart…seriously…they love that guy I tell you.  There is an entire store dedicated to opera, Mozart, and all things to do with music.  Jasmin and I were going to try and see “Tosca” that night, But it was four hours before curtain and there was already a long line with a very small chance of us getting any tickets.  Which was really too bad.  But I was still able to buy postcards, a t-shirt, and take pictures as if I’d been there.
So since we were unable to go to the Opera, and since we’re both musical theatre nerds, we instead decided on a night of karaoke!  I was so excited because it has been too long. We made an event on couch surfing, so we were joined by a couple other people, which was nice. The place we went to was small, but full.  It was nice because we were able to sing a couple songs.  I busted out my usual “Cabaret” as well as “Ironic” by Alanis Morissette, a duet of the Moulin Rouge version of “Lady Marmalade,” and just to show off my rapping abilities, a little “Yea” by Usher…

So after a long night, we settled down, only to wake up in the morning for class.  I myself ventured over to Prater Park, the famous amusement park and Ferris Wheel.  It’s the one featured in that James Bond movie with the cello playing girl.  The only thing was, it was completely empty!  It looked like a deserted park.  Fortunately, I had my dad’s fancy camera, and I spent a good two hours snapping some artsy shots. I didn’t actually go on the Ferris Wheel though because it wouldn’t have been that fun by myself, plus it was like 10 euros.  But I still took pictures of it.  Here’s one of my favorites…
You can see the rest of them here.
After my trip to Prater, I headed back to my host’s house.  There we went and got the traditional wiener schnitzel and watched High Fidelity (as mentioned in the Top Ten Tuesday.)  But then it was time for me to catch a night train to Zurich.  And so I bid my host and this beautiful city farewell, hoping to return again.
