I wanna be where everybody knows my name

Well, I’ve done it.  And it was no small feat.  So let the praise commence and the judging ne’er begin…
I have finished Cheers.
Those of you who have been with me through this whole ordeal know that it was quite the commitment.  In fact let’s just do some math shall we?  I started around Thanksgiving – we’ll go with November 25th because thanks to my lazy list blogs, I know I was busy watching other kinds of television the few days before.  And I finished about a week ago, so let’s just make this simple and say January 25th – two months or 61 days.  That sounds about right.  Now there are 11 (yep count em) seasons with 269 episodes.  Have you gotten out your calculator yet?  This means that I watched an average of 4 and a half episodes a night.  Oh my god I have no life.
Ok so this may seem ridiculous and pitiful, and so many other words that I’m hoping my mother does not include in her next email, but it’s really only two hours.  And lets face it, so many of you out there watch so many more hours than that a night.  You realize that’s only two episodes of CSI or True Blood.  Of course some days I didn’t watch it, and some days I watched more, but this is an average.
So now that I’ve made my excuses and you’ve realized you’re no better than me, allow me to tell you what I think of the show…I LOVE IT!  It really was ahead of its time.  Granted the time I’m referring to was at a point in my life where the sexual innuendos, alcoholic references, and subtle insults would have gone over my head, but now I am older and more mature, which leads me to make the innuendos, references, and insults.
I also love all the guest stars.  And unlike TV shows now, where the guest star has to be a big name in order for people to tune in, these are stars who are popular now, and can say “way back when, I was a guest star on Cheers.”  It’s fun to make all the connections knowing what I do now while watching a show from "back then."  Like Harry Connick Jr. and Woody Harrelson playing cousins who would both go on to have regular guest roles as Grace’s beau.  And every single reference ever to people walking into a bar and yelling your name.  And so many other things.  I can’t get over how I lived in a world of so many unknown pop culture references.  But all this has changed.
And you know what?  I feel like a more culturally accepted person.  In fact, I think if I continue on my path towards syndicated enlightenment, I will be a better person.  And if not that, at least a better trivia player.

And now...on to Frasier.

Word of the day: Popcultuur – pop culture
